REISHI (GANODERMA LUCIDUM, LING ZHI, SHINY LACQUER PORLING)

Reishi, also known as Ling Zhi or Shining Lacquer Polypore, is one of the most important medicinal mushrooms in Chinese tradition. Revered as the "mushroom of immortality" or "mushroom of eternal life," it is considered perhaps the most important basic mushroom.

According to tradition and early records, Reishi has been used in various cultures for approximately 4,000 years. In the 2,000-year-old Shennong Ben Cao Jing (partially: "Shen Long Ben Tsao"), Reishi is considered to be among the highest class of "herbs of God." Due to its rarity, it was long available only to the emperor and other high-ranking figures in China. Today, it is one of the most widespread and popular medicinal mushrooms in the world.

Reishi grows primarily on old, decaying tree trunks of deciduous trees such as oaks and birches. Its semicircular, almost heart-shaped cap is usually very shiny, giving it a lacquered appearance, which explains its German name, "glossy lacquer polypore." Today, Reishi is cultivated primarily in China, as demand far exceeds wild availability.
