Cordyceps is an extremely rare and highly valuable mushroom. It is found primarily at elevations above 3,000 meters in the Tibetan plateaus, where it was discovered by yak herders who observed extraordinary vitality and resilience in their animals, which they ate while grazing. Cordyceps has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for almost 1,500 years.

Unlike other fungi, Cordyceps does not grow on old wood, but reproduces as a parasite of a specific species of caterpillar, hence the name "caterpillar fungus," which could just as easily refer to the Cordyceps' appearance with its thin, brown fruiting bodies. Today, Cordyceps is no longer cultivated in living caterpillars, but is usually grown on special substrates or nutrient solutions.
