HERICIUM ERINACEUS (HEDGEHOGBEARD, MONKEY MUSHROOM, LION'S MANE, POM-POM)

Hericium erinaceus, also known as lion's mane and hedgehog's beard, is considered a truly special delicacy among edible mushrooms in Asia thanks to its delicate aroma. Its appearance is also remarkably unusual. The fruiting body of this mushroom resembles fur or coral, consisting entirely of downward-pointing, thin "spines" measuring two to six centimeters in length. This impressive appearance has rightly earned the Hericium the nicknames "lion's mane" and "hedgehog's beard." Modern cultivated forms have shorter spines and often resemble sponges.

The fungus grows on tree stumps or the wounds of older or dead deciduous trees and is found primarily in the Northern Hemisphere. Evidence shows that Hericium was a well-known medicinal mushroom not only in Asian botany but also among indigenous peoples of North America.
