Acacias exist in thousands of different species and are native primarily to subtropical climates. The rare trees and shrubs of the Acacia tribe (Acacieae) are hardwood plants within the legume family (Fabaceae). The approximately 1,400 Acacia species are distributed worldwide from the subtropics to the tropics.
The most important acacia region is the so-called "Acacia gum belt" in Africa, which stretches from Senegal and Nigeria to Sudan. Traditionally, all parts of the acacia tree are used in Africa, including food.
Acacia fiber is made from the dried latex of acacia trees. For this purpose, the bark of the trees is tapped through a cut or hole. The cuts and holes represent small injuries to the trees, from which the latex now flows. This latex is collected in containers, cleaned of unwanted impurities and wood residue, gently dried, and then milled. Acacia fiber is a natural dietary fiber. It serves as a food source for various lacto- and bifidobacteria. These bacteria process the acacia fiber into short-chain fatty acids.
The fiber-rich acacia fiber powder is tasteless and highly soluble. It's ideal as a vegan thickener for baked goods and sauces, or for adding to drinks and smoothies.
