Did you know that with every wash cycle, countless microplastic fibers break off our clothes? These fibers cannot be reliably filtered by washing machines or sewage treatment plants, and thus end up in our waterways. The microplastic particles break down into ever smaller pieces and accumulate toxins. They are ingested by fish and other marine creatures, which cannot distinguish the tiny plastic from their food. The consequences for animals and nature are serious.
And we are also affected: the plastic fibers from our clothing enter our bodies through food.
Place synthetic garments in the GUPPYFRIEND wash bag, zip it up completely, and wash as usual with other garments at a maximum of 40°C. Then remove the damp garments from the GUPPYFRIEND wash bag, remove any trapped fibers from the hem, and dispose of them with the general waste.
What's next? The general rule for washing is: Wash at a colder temperature and less frequently. Liquid detergent means less fiber breakage, because powder detergent promotes abrasion. Wash rough and soft fabrics separately and reduce the spin speed. Sounds complicated? But it's not that difficult. We've compiled all the tips for you in detail in our GUPPYFRIEND washing guide.
Also: Always filter your cleaning and washing water! According to a study, each of us produces an average of around five kilograms of microplastics per person per year. This microplastic enters the environment through various routes. Our products, such as the GUPPYFRIEND wash bag, the GUPPYFRIEND washing machine filter, the GUPPYFRIEND bucket filter, and the GUPPYFRIEND sink filter, help you easily and effectively capture microplastics where they are created. Throwing plastic into the ocean out of convenience? Not us! Thank you for your contribution to an intact ecosystem!
